Do I have to pay a damage deposit?
Yes, a £250 deposit is payable for each room. The full deposit must be paid by the time you check in and is secured by the Deposit Protection Scheme (DPS). You will receive an email confirmation from DPS when the deposit is registered.
What does my damage deposit cover and when will I get it back?
The damage deposit is registered with the DPS and covers any damage you may cause to your room; this excludes normal wear and tear. It is refundable at the end of your stay with us and usually received within 28 days as long as there are no damages or outstanding rent. You will receive an email from DPS confirming when your deposit is ready to be returned.
What is included in the rent?
Your stylish room, access to our vibrant communal spaces, all utility bills (i.e. electricity, water, heating) Wi–Fi internet and IPTV are all included.
The following is not included:
• contents insurance
• meals
• laundry
• TV licence (where a TV is provided as part of the room);
• linen (including bedding and towels); or
• crockery, cutlery and cooking utensils
You can purchase a wide option of student living packs from our MyScape portal and at reception for all of your bedding, linen, crockery, cleaning and hospitality needs. Add-on services and other accessories such as stationery can also be purchased.
Do I have to pay council tax?
Full time students in the UK don’t have to pay council tax, however you have to provide us with a certificate to show your status as an exempt student.
What facilities do you have?
Communal lounge, study areas, communal kitchen, 24 hour reception, CCTV, electronic key fob access, cinema area, games tables, laundry access, gym (apart from Scape Surrey). Mile End Residence also has 2 on-site restaurants.
What’s the difference between room levels?
- Lower G-1
- Middle 2-6
- Upper 7-8
Rooms with a view have a view looking to the city or parklands. Feature Studios have a window seat or window sill. Studio+ Premier has more floor space and bigger windows. Studios are the most compact and Studio++ rooms are the most spacious.
How big are the rooms?
- Studio approx. 14 square metres
- Studio+ approx. 16 square metres
- Studio+ Premier approx. 18 square metres
- Studio++ approx. 24 square metres
Are the restaurants included?
Our restaurants aren’t included with your rent but, the menus are a good price and have been designed with students in mind.
Do you allow pets?
No, sorry!
What payment types are accepted?
We accept all debit and credit cards to confirm a booking. Please note there is no charge when paying with a UK debit card; with all other cards a 2.5% surcharge will be added. Card payments may be taken online, over the phone or at Reception. For the instalment payments you can also pay via Pay to Study, a quick, easy and secure online bank transfer for international students. We do not accept: direct bank transfers, cheques or cash payments.
Do I need to be 18 years of age or older?
To stay at Scape you will need to be over 18 when you move in.
Do I need a guarantor to book?
You don’t need a guarantor.
Can I move in later than my start date?
Yes. You can move in on the day your contract starts or any day after the start of your contract. Please contact us and we can always look into this for you.
Can I move in before my start date?
Unfortunately, it is not possible to move in earlier. But in exceptional circumstances we may be able to sort something out. Please contact us and we can always look into this for you.
Can I live near my friend?
That shouldn’t be a problem, but this will depend on availability. Please contact us and we can always look into this for you.
Can I swap my room once booked?
When you confirm your booking, you will have a 14 day cooling off period to swap or cancel your room. After this period has passed, we cannot arrange any swaps.
If I book with a friend, do we get a discount?
We do not do group discounts although we may have offers running, please check with the Accommodation Team.
Living at Mile End Residence
Can I share a room?
Scape rooms are for single occupancy only. Although Studio++ are available to couples, as long as you are both full time students. Please note when booking a dual occupancy room, this will increase the weekly rent by 25%.
What happens if something in my room, e.g. a chair or light bulb breaks?
Please report any maintenance issues on your Residence account. Your problem will be logged and a member of our on-site maintenance team will help resolve the issue as soon as possible.
How is my room cleaned?
It is your responsibility to keep your room clean. Vacuum cleaners are provided for you to use, free of charge. We also offer a cleaning service at an additional charge. Please ask at Reception for more details.
Is there a gym/fitness club?
Yes, the gyms is totally free. To use the gym, students will need to complete a health and safety declaration and waiver.
Is there a curfew?
There is no curfew, but we do operate 'quiet hours' between 11:00pm and 7:00am. You can access the building 24 hours a day, although after 8:00pm, you will need to use your key fob to gain access to the building.
Can I have guests stay overnight?
You can have overnight guests stay with you as long as it is cleared with Management in advance and your guests are registered with reception when they arrive. You may have a guest stay with you for up to 7 nights, unless otherwise agreed by the Residence Manager.
Is there car parking?
No, but we are very accessible and close to lots of public transport links.
If I go away for the university holidays do I need to move my possessions out of my room?
No, you only need to move out of the room at the end of your contract.
If I go away for the university holidays do I need to pay rent for that period?
Yes, you still have to pay rent for the duration of your contract even if you are away on holiday.
Can I smoke in my room?
Mile End residence is smokefree.
Is it noisy?
All windows are double glazed and access to corridors is limited to residents within that floor. We also operate quiet hours in the evening; however London is a busy city so you may hear some noise from time to time and please bear in mind other students can be a bit noisy sometimes too.
Is it a safe area?
London is a major city, and we do advise students to follow general safety precautions. That aside, the residence is equipped with 24 hour security and reception, CCTV and key fob entry which allows students into the building at night, their corridor and then their room.
Can I store my belongings?
There is under-bed storage, wardrobes and drawers. We do not currently offer any other storage.
What’s the nearest tube/rail station?
Mile End Tube Station is just a 3 minute walk away from us which gives you the Central Line, Circle Line, District Line and the Hammersmith and City Line.
Can I have a proof of address?
Yes. Once you have a confirmed booking, you can view your invoices, receipts and contract on your residence online account. These should all serve as a proof of address. If you need additional proof, the Reception team can also provide a signed letter confirming your address.
Do you have A/C?
There is no air conditioning in the rooms but there is air con in all gyms and communal spaces apart from Scape Greenwich. All rooms come with window vents and individual temperature controls.
Can I buy an additional fridge to put in my room?
Yes you can.
Can I let my friend live in my room when I’m away?
No. You are responsible for your guests and must accompany them at all times.
Can I bring my bicycle?
Yes, we offer bicycle storage.
Check in and check out
Do I need to bring any documentation for check-in?
Yes, when you arrive and check-in you will be asked to provide photo ID. This can be a driving licence, passport or any form of photo ID that shows your full name and date of birth.
What are check in times?
Providing there are no outstanding fees, check-in times are generally Monday-Sunday 2pm – 8pm. If there are any outstanding payments, please try to make these prior to arrival or make sure your arrival is between Monday-Friday 2pm – 5pm and you are able to make all the necessary payments before checking in.
How do I check out?
In the week before your contract end date, you will be asked to organise a room inspection for any damages. Once this is done, you just need to return your keys (room, post box and safe box) to reception and we can check you out.
I am leaving early, who should I tell?
We know that some students may not stay for the whole duration of their contract, please tell us in advance before you leave in time for us to inspect your room.
Cancellation and fees
What do I have to do if I want to cancel my contract?
There is a standard 14 day cooling off period from the time you book your room. Within this period, you can cancel for a full refund. Past this, you are responsible for finding a suitable replacement. Until a suitable replacement is found you are liable for the rent owed, and once you’ve found a replacement you will have to pay up to a £500 admin fee.
Can I have someone sublet my room?
Sorry you cannot sublet your room. You may cancel your Residence Agreement, as long as you find a suitable student replacement (as defined in the Residence Agreement). Please be aware that you will be liable for any outstanding payments and all reasonable administrative charges incurred in connection with this.
If I don’t make the grade/get a visa/don’t go to uni/etc., do I get a refund?
If you are within the 14 days cooling off period, you can cancel. Outside of this period, you will need to find a suitable replacement. Once this person has been found, they can take over your contract.
